Welcome to A Colorful Collection!

Who We Are…

A Colorful Collection (ACC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to amplifying diverse voices. While we focus on increasing representation in children’s books, our work extends beyond childhood to support storytellers of all ages, backgrounds, & identities.

Our Why.

Barriers to inclusive storytelling persist due to systemic barriers that silence diverse voices and identities, racial disparities within the publishing industry, and an increase in banned books.

A Colorful Collection was created to empower the voices of those who have felt unheard and unseen by the world around them. By creating a storytelling platform, we aim to create space for storytellers of all backgrounds to feel seen, valued, and celebrated.

What we do:

  1. Supporting Emerging Authors & Illustrators: We work alongside authors & illustrators to bring their stories to life. With a focus on children’s literature, we support the publishing journey from the ideation phase to the physical book, offering guidance in reviewing, marketing, and printing.

  2. Building Community through Storytelling: Our Community Blog is a space for storytellers of all ages, backgrounds, and identities to share their experiences, reflections, and creative work.

  3. Hosting & Participating in Community Events: We engage with our community through events such as read-alouds, free pop-up book fairs, and tabling alongside mission-aligned organizations.

Culture

  • “Representation doesn’t just mean having a prototypical character of a certain ethnicity but having diverse characters with different personalities to show kids that there is so much they can be…”

    Notes from our Community

  • “I think it’s beneficial for all demographics to see aspects of life from different cultures. It helps them broaden their scope for empathy and understanding as they encounter people from all walks of life as they grow up.”

    Notes from our Community

  • "Our world is becoming increasingly diverse and connected and it is important to show that in children’s literature. Without representation, children would learn to have a narrow view of the world rather than an empathetic and realistic one."

    Notes from our Community

  • "Growing up in a predominantly white community as the only Latina in ESL due to not knowing English at a young age, I was often picked on for my slicked-back hair. I wish I had seen more of people like me. Despite this, in every single book I read, I always pictured myself as the main character, regardless of how the character was described, because that’s all I had."
